American Information Center

American Information Center, the center of American culture,   opened in 1994.  The present day there are more than 30 American Centers and Corners in Russia (see the map below). A mission of  these  centers is to strengthen mutual understanding between  peoples of Russia and the United States. The mission is  realized by the means of  various cultural and educational projects. Besides, Rostov-on-Don American Information Center has a  big enough  collection of  books, journals, magazines, CDs and DVDs about the USA for visitors to read and watch. These resources are provided by the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Visitors also have an opportunity to master their English with a native speaker  at the sessions of the American Discussion Club.

 

EducationUSA Advising Center

EducationUSA Advising Center belongs to a network of educational advising centers affiliated with the US Department of State and provides  accurate, comprehensive, unbiased and timely information about  all accredited U.S. higher education institutions. The Center  has been working since 1994.  It  has a large resource base including university guides, college handbooks, directories, text-books to prepare for American exams TOEFL, GRE, SAT, GMAT, TSE.  The Center staff  delivers presentations and individual consultations on EducationUSA,  conducts  Annual international education fairs,  exhibitions and outreach programs at high schools, universities, public and private organizations. EducationUSA Center also coordinates  reentry activities  of the US exchange programs alumni.

The both Centers work in close cooperation to successfully implement their goals and tasks.

EVENTS TO COME

 On May 6th  and 7th , 2  events devoted  to  the 65th anniversary of  Russia’s  victory in the Great Patriotic War took place in the Center of International Information Resources .

  "The Role of Allies in World War II" discussion  was held on May 6th. Attendees talked  about

some key events of World War II and the role of allies  in the common  victory.  Each of visitors prepared a small report on the main events of World War II. The performance of

Eileen Emch was the most amazing one. She told  the story about Joseph Beyrle - the only American soldier who served both in the United States Army and the Soviet Army during  World War II.  Joseph Beyrle's son – John Beyerle  - is now the United States Ambassador to Russia.

On May 7th,  all the Discussion Club members watched the documentary  "Between the Wars", from which they understood that breaking the cooperation among allies and the policy of isolationism can become a reason of similar global  conflicts, as it was in the 20th century.

In the end of this event, one of the members  organized an exhibition of military technology models of the War times and expressed his wishes to see such military technology in museums only.

On December 18th in EducationUSA Advising Center there was a meeting with representatives of City Bank, who told about the advantages of opening an account at the bank. For those who used to travel a lot City Bank, as one of the most known banks in the USA with its branches almost in any country of the word, offered a variety of opportunities for saving money by using its debit and credit cards.Finally, the Rostov-on-Don representatives of CCUSA company offered internships in the USA in business, finance, management, etc. and a great opportunity to work as counselor with children in American camps during summer time.

On December 1st, IREX representative Yevgenia Pletniova delivered a presentation of Global UGRAD exchange program for the 1, 2, 3 and 4-year students. After the presentation Yevgenia answered the questions and gave consultations to students. 23 students visited the event.

On November 20th, EducationUSA Advising Center demonstrated American western “High Noon”/2000 (Tom Skerritt and Susanna Thompson staring) in English with subtitles.

A lecture on Graduate Study, devoted to the International Education Week(IEW) 2009 , took place at the EducationUSA Advising Center on November 19. American professor  John T. Baun told about graduate level of study, types of universities, admission process and funding US graduate study. The lecture was exceptionally informative and arose deep  interest of visitors who asked a lot of questions.

EducationUSA Adviser Tatiana Rudnitskaya gave  information about  IEW goals and events which are conducted at the center in November. She also invited 1st-4th year  students to take part in a contest on Global Ugrad program.

On the 19th of November the Center of International Informational Resources of DSPL will present the exhibition “Vernisage of Don” consecrated to All-Russian week of people with disabilities (4th-13th of December 2009).  The creative works are made in techniques of  “collage” and “gobelin”. The authors of these  exhibits are  pupils of the  Children Charity “Anastasia”. The exhibition will work till 25th  of December.

On November 10th, EducationUSA Advising Center delivered the presentation called “Undergraduate Study in the USA” and devoted to educational opportunities for international undergraduate students. Auditory got the information about the U.S. private and public universities, admission requirements and costs of education. After the presentation the adviser answered the questions and told visitors about the current US university grant programs.

On October 20, EducationUSA Advising Center delivered presentation called "If You Want to Study in the USA". Visitors leant about the peculiarities of the US educational system and got detailed information about graduate and postgraduate study. After the presentation the visitors met with 2004-2005 UGRAD program alumna Alina Andreeva, who told about this program and her personal experience in the USA.

On Thursday, October 1, the American Center had a presentation made by Michael Snyder, Public Diplomacy Officer of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow who gave a talk on topic about medical care in the United States of America. The audience of 10 people learned interesting facts about the peculiar issues of medical care and insurance in the USA. The lecturer talked about the different types of insurance, how the American medical system works, what reforms and changes the president Barack Obama wants to undertake in this sphere and the reaction of the citizens
